Krasnoarmeysky ((ロシア語:Красноармейский), literally ''Red Army'') is an inhabited locality (an urban-type settlement) in Chaunsky District of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia. Population: 0 (2002 Census);〔 ==History== The settlement was founded in March 1940 on the banks of the Pyrkanayvaam River, 100 km from Pevek〔(''Красноармейский (Чукотский автономный округ)'' ) (''Krasnoarmeysky (Chukotka Autonmous Okrug'') - Great Soviet Encyclopedia〕 to house the miners and administrative workers from the Pyrkakay ((ロシア語:Пыркакай)) tin mine, with the name being changed to Krasnoarmeysky In January 1942 to honour the victories of the Red Army.〔V.V. Leontev and K.A. Novikova, ''Топонимический словарь северо-востока СССР'' (''Toponymic Dictionary of the Northeastern USSR'') (1989) Magadan. p.204〕 It was given settlement status in 1953, but was determined to no longer be economically viable in 1998.〔Dead-cities.ru (Entry on Krasnoarmeysky ) 〕 As of 2009, Krasnoarmeysky is included in the list of settlements currently in the process of being liquidated.〔
